Determination of General and Specific Combining Abilities in Some Oriental Tobacco Varieties

Hybrids were produced from half-diallel crosses between Xanthi-2A, Nail, Gümüşhacıköy, Taşova, Katerini, Canik and Erbaa tobacco varieties. The experiment was designed according to the `Split Plots on Randomized Complete Block` with three replications. Plant height, leaf width, leaf length, number of leaves, leaf yield, organoleptic observations, nicotine and sugar rates were evaluated. General combining abilities of Nail cultivar for yield and Xanthi-2A, Katerini and Taşova cultivars for quality were found to have positive effects. Specific combining abilities of Xanthi-2A x Katerini, Nail x Katerini, Nail x Canik, Nail x Erbaa, Gümüşhacıköy x Canik, Katerini x Canik, Katerini x Erbaa ve Canik x Erbaa hybrids for yield and Xanthi-2A x Taşova, Xanthi-2A x Katerini, Xanthi-2A x Erbaa, Nail x Taşova, Nail x Katerini, Taşova x Katerini, Taşova x Erbaa ve Katerini x Erbaa hybrids for quality were determined to have superior. Based on the results, Xanthi-2A x Katerini (170 kg/da yield, 75% quality), Nail x Katerini (164 kg/da yield, 75% quality), Katerini x Erbaa (167 kg/da yield, 73% quality) and Canik x Erbaa (184 kg/da yield, 68% quality) hybrids were found to have superior yield and quality traits than Xanthi/2A cultivar that has produce in Erbaa location.
