ROLE OF NITROGEN IN WHEAT YIELD FORMATION

Abdülkadir AVÇİN

1 Tarla Bitkileri Merkez Araştırma Ens. ANKARA - The use of physiological and biochemical criteria in development of high yielding and quality wheat cultivars, depends on understanding of nitrogen metabolism of the plant assosiated with yield and quality. Therefore, the followings should be provided in order to increase wheat yield:

-High amount of total dry matter and nitrogen accumulation prior to anthesis,
-High nitrogen uptake and assimilation at the time of grain filling,
-High nitrogen transportation to the grain,
-High photosynthetic rate during grain filling, and
-A long grain filling period. Keywords : Wheat yield; dry matter and nitrogen accumulation; during grain filling
