- Twenty one bitter vetch lines collected from different regions were investigated on dry-land area of Erzurum in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The seed, hay yield and their characteristics showed very differences in the lines.

The seed and straw yields of lines ranged between 80.1 kg/da and 136.6 kg/da, and 139.1 kg/da and 208.4 kg/da respectively. While the differences of crude protein (CP) content in seed of lines were no significant, the CP yield of seeds was found between 17.4 kg/da and 30.0 kg/da. The highest hight to the lowest pod (16.8 cm) was recorded in E-8 and the highest pod per plant (12.6 number) was found in E-9, while D-261 and D-404 lines were the better lines depend on seed number of per pod (2.83) and seed weight of per pod (134.5 mg), respectively. The highest 1000-seed weight (55.1 g) has been found in D-404. The hay yields of lines and CP content of hay ranged between 199.3-282.0 kg/da and 13.70-16.34 %, respectively. E-2, E-9 and E-8 have the highest CP yield of hay while E-9 has been the highest plant length. Keywords : Bitter vetch; Vicia ervilia (L.) Willd.; hay yield
