² Ankara Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Bahçe Bitkileri Bölümü, 06110 Dışkapı-Ankara - This research was conducted to determine some characters in the first development stage of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) at Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Ankara University in 2001. in the experiment, Yenice 5-38 (spineless), Dinçer 5-118 (spineless) and 5-154 (spiny) varieties were used as material. In the pot research, seedling height, root height, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, root/shoot dry weight ratio at three different stage (7, 14 and 21 days after emergence) and growth rate were determined. Field experiment was established as randomised block desing with three replications and plant height and seed yield were investigated. According to the results of the research; harvest time and varieties constituted significant differences for investigated characters. As the development advanced, investigated traits showed distinct increases. However, increasing ratio was different in respect of varieties. It was observed that 5-154 variety having the highest root/shoot dry weight ratio gave the highest seed yield. Keywords : Safflower; Carthamus tinctorius; first development stage
