- This study was carried out to investigate the effect of various levels of N fertilizer and farmyard manure on important agronomic characters of some forage grasses under dry conditions of Ankara, at the experiment field of Agronomy Department, Agricultııral Faculty, Ankara University during 1996-97.

Crested wheatgrass, intermediate wheatgrass and smooth bromegrass were used as the plant material. 0, 4, 8, 12 kg N as amonium sulphate per decare and 1000, 2000, 3000 kg/da of farmyard manure were applied. Main tiller length, number of tillers, herbage and hay yield, dry matter ratio and yield and crude protein ratio and yield were studied in the experiment.

The tallest main tiller, the highest tiller number, fresh and hay yield, dry matter yield and ratio crude protein yield and ratio in crested wheatgrass were obtained from 12 kg N/da applied plots.

The highest herbage and hay yield, dry matter yield, crude protein ratio and yield for intermediate wheatgrass were obtained from 12 kg N/da applied plots: meanwhile the tallest main tiller was taken from 3000 kg farmyard manure /da; the highest dry matter was found in control.

The highest tiller numbers, herbage and hay yield, dry matter yield, crude protein yield and ratios, smooth bromegrass were taken from 12 kg N/da applied plots; the tallest main tiller from 3000 kg farmyard manure /da, the highest dry matter ratio were found in control and 1000 kg farmyard manure /da and 3000 kg farmyard manure /da applied plots.
