Sakarya is a location where wheat rust diseases are seen intensively due to its climatic characteristics.
Rust diseases are fungal diseases that cause significant loss of yield and quality. Although chemical
methods to fight against these diseases are possible, it is important to develop a durable variety in order
to obtain economically suitable products that are better for environment as well as human health. The
new wheat varieties grown in the region are generally known to be resistant to rust diseases. However,
genotypic variations in rust disease agents are causing the endurance to fail. The `Warrior` yellow rust,
estimated to come from Europe in 2014, has been observed in Sakarya and affected many varieties known
as resistant to yellow rust and durable. For this reason, as a part of the `Southern Marmara Region Bread
Wheat Breeding Research` project carried out by the Maize Research Institute, 136 registered bread wheat
varieties planted annually were tested against yellow and leaf rust under natural epidemic conditions in
years 2014–2015 and 2015–2016. Among these, 91 varieties were found yellow rust resistant, and 25
varieties susceptible in 2014–2015. Leaf rust has not developed. In years 2015–2016, 93 varieties have
been determined as resistant or medium resistant to yellow rust, and 18 varieties for leaf rust. These
varieties resistant to yellow and leaf rust and moderately durable will be used as parents in the development
of resistant varieties within the scope of the breeding project.
