Sunflower has the first place in terms of sowing area, production and oil consumption among the oil
seed crops. However, the amount of vegetable oil produced in our country has not been met our
demands. Totally approximately $ 3 billion was paid for oil seed, meal and crude oil imports in 2008. The
extending of safflower and rapeseed cultivation has become a necessity to increase production and
reduce imports of oil seed crops. When safflower sowing area and production were analyzed, safflower
sowing area and production were determined as 53.696 da and 7.086 ton, respectively. On the other
hand, rapeseed was produced 84 thousand tons in the area of 278.784 da. 90 % of total rapeseed
sowing area was placed in Marmara region while The Central Anatolia had the first place with 89% of
total area in safflower cultivation. Especially a significant increase has not been determined in the
production of safflower cultivation area until 2006. But, implemented supports and encouragement have
been provided remarkable increases in safflower and rapeseed production.
